Germany is so much more than Berlin, Munich or the other big cities. Do you know that ⅓ Germany is still covered by forest, making it one of the countries that you can explore for escaping your hustle bustle city life and coming back to nature.
However, in case nature is not really your element, you can visit the smaller but cute cities as well, like Freiburg. Freiburg im Breisgau is a jewel in Black Forest area. I love this city because aside from being the sunniest city in Germany, it is also filled with beautiful alleys and affordable things to do.
What to do in Freiburg im Breisgau?
1. Visit the Münsterplatz
Personally, this is my favourite point to start the trip. Why? Because it is located in the center, plus you will find a lot of interesting stuff here, i.e. local stands that sell from your favourite seasonings for your cooking, gifts and souvenirs that you can bring home, the famous ‘’Die Lange Rote’’ etc.

2. Eat ‘’Die Lange Rote’’
This 35 cm long red sausage served with bread, onion and mustard, is definitely a must eat here since this is Freiburg’s speciality. You can already smell the amazing smell of these fried sausages from afar. If you are a vegetarian though, you can buy the animal friendly version on the tofu stand next door.

3. Visit Freiburg Cathedral
Churches are something that is common in Germany and also Europe in general. If you admire the Gregorian style of church and also want to take a closer look at the gargoyles, go visit this church. But please, be respectful and keep your voice low and avoid visiting when the prayer is being held.

4. Discover “Bächle”
They are gutters or open streams that you can find around the city. At first glance, you may not find anything particular about it. But once they are decorated, they are actually kinda cute. I saw a restaurant decorated its ‘’Bächle’’ with their champagne glass and buckets. You can have yours too by buying a boat from the official tourist center, then choose your ”Bächle” to place it.

5. Visit Market Hall
Market Hall is not just for you market lovers! Why? Since you can also buy your lunch here. At Market Hall you can find a lot of stands offering their goods, from seasoning to fish. You can also rest and drink your beer or have a quick snack here to full-fill your little hunger.

6. Walk around Old Town
Seriously, just walk and stroll around the beautiful old town. Be amazed by the cute alleys. Pay attention to the shops’ windows. Visit the shops. My favourites usually involve creative postcards and little things to collect, i.e. stamps, magnets, etc.

7. Climb the Schlossberg
Now, the a little bit tiring part. Since you have to climb up the hill for 30 minutes from the old town. Moreover, the journey is not over until you have successfully climbed the 30m tower. This is the best and the only way to get the panoramic view of this lovely city. Was it tiring? OMG yes! But, I would recommend you to do it. It will be worth it in the end, trust me 😀

8. Drink your beer at Martinsbräu
After all the climbing, I was tired and craved something cold. What else is better to be drunk aside from locally brewed beer. After all, you are in Germany, right? And the Germans love their beer. I always go local when I travel, so I went to Martinsbräu, the local brewery since 1989.

9. Buy bubble tea at Sarang
This is subjective. But, I love bubble tea! Freiburg is also popular as the university city. That means there are a lot of international students with their international taste buds. Thanks to the popularity of K-Pop, Korean culture is becoming more well-known these days, including bubble tea. I love the Brown Sugar Bubble tea from Sarang. It is one of the best that I’ve ever tried.

10. Stroll around Little Venice
Probably my most favourite activity to do in Freiburg. The concept of a city surrounded by water elements, like Venice, Amsterdam or Colmar, is my cup of tea. It gives the cities a romantic and also cute vibe. Little Venice in Freiburg definitely checks this aspect. That’s why I closed my day in Freiburg by strolling around this area.

I spent only a day in Freiburg im Breisgau. But, I wished I spent more days there! If you are interested in hiking or nature, you can of course visit the mountain areas in Black Forest like Todtnauberg or Ibach. But do spend some time in this lovely city, since it is also located in Black Forest as well. I’m sure you will have a good time here 🙂
