Santorini in January

Santorini has always sparked me with some romantic vibe in its name. A Greece island that its popularity surpasses Athens as a world popular destination. When one hears about Santorini, the mind flies directly to the breathtaking view of the white houses complete with a blue dome on the top surrounded with the breathtaking view of the sea and volcano from around every corner.

Two friends enjoying the Santorini view – Cats are almost everywhere here and they are friendly 🙂

Santorini is beautiful, but I personally think it is the most beautiful during the sunset time. We lived in Fira and did a hike to Oia. Oia is arguably the perfect place to enjoy Santorini sunset. We just chose a cafe which offered the sea and church view and sat there mindfully.

Please bear in mind that the bus might not be operating regularly and always check the time table in planning to go back to Fira. I would not recommend hiking at night since the paths are quite challenging and not so safe to be walked blindly in the dark.

Note that since Santorini is a popular destination, pick your season to go there wisely if you don’t want to compete with a lot of tourist groups. We were there in January. It was winter time, but it was mild in comparison to Germany, Hamburg’s winter. I could walk easily without my winter jacket, but just with my long sleeve, cardigan and a light rain jacket. And for my bottom, I just wore a skirt with thicker stockings and sneakers. I didn’t freeze even though I get cold easily.

I didn’t feel cold – It was enough for Santorini in January

However, the downside of traveling here in winter is that almost everything is close. But, there were some constant restaurants and also shops that were open everyday. Our favorite spot is Pelikan Kipos. It was a nice place to not just enjoy your meal, but also enjoy nature indoors. The place was decorated with real plants which attract butterflies, bees and birds. And they serve freshly squeezed orange juice and delicious food at a reasonable price.
