How Time Goes By

Late autumn walk @ Niendorfer Gehege, taken by hubby

Do you feel like time flies faster when you are older? As a kid you waited for your birthday patiently and two weeks felt like ages. But now, you are in your late twenties and your beginning until late twenties seems to have passed away. Just like that.

Have you ever wondered why this happens? I did some research and it all goes back to our beloved brains. Our brains work differently as kids and adults, in which they grow in sizes and neurons’ complexity as we grow older. As kids, we experience a lot of new things for the first time.

Let’s recall a bit, shall we? Do you still remember the moment when you made a friendship with your childhood friend? Or the smile of your first crush at school? Or that moment that you felt scared watching your first horror movies? These most likely are still restored almost perfectly (as you can guarantee them) up there.

However, when we get older, there are already a lot of visual memories that have been kept in our storage. The more and often we see, the more familiar it is for us to perceive those objects in our visualizations. As a result, they don’t last that memorable and time seems to have sped up in a blink of an eye.

Same thing has happened to me as the seasons change through time. I walk around the park to enjoy the good weather. But as I looked at the fallen leaves, the saying ”Ooh wow, it’s not autumn anymore” is unavoidable. It seems like just yesterday, they were still hanging beautifully, flashing their 50 shades of brown, packed from above. And now there they are, sogging at the bottom of my shoes as I walked through the park.

Time surely ‘speeds up’ as I grow older and I’m curious how it is for you. Do you also feel the same?
