Basel Colourful Street @ Basel, Switzerland
When you think of Switzerland, probably its beautiful nature comes into your mind first. But how about the cities there? Well, I will tell you one that I visited in the past weeks.
Basel is a Switzerland’s city that lies between France and Germany, making it a perfect destination if you want to do your Europe trip. It takes only approx. 45 minutes from Black Forest a.k.a. Schwarzwald and Colmar.
Why visit Basel?
Basel is a city with its strong identity (in accordance with its closeness to France and Germany), where the modern meets the traditional. It is reflected in its architecture, yearly vibrant festivals and colourful city which I will show you in the pictures below.
Top things to do in Basel
1. Try Basler Leckerli
What is it? It is a type of gingerbread originally from Basel, it is sweet and well-spiced. Or if you have ever tried Lebkuchen from Germany, they definitely share some similarities. With some hints of ginger, kardamom, cinnamon, they somehow will remind you of winter.

2. Visit the Museum of Art
This is a convenient way to enjoy the painting collections from the famous world painters in one place, i.e. Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali, Gaguin and more. Do check out the website as well as they offer a free admission on certain hours on certain day.

3. Stroll around Basel Old Town
Pay attention to the contrast between colourful walls, medieval churches, the old city gate, and the modern fountain in the middle of state historic houses.

4. Make a stop at Marktplatz
The heart of this Old Town is full of local delicacies and produce. Shop here since they are fresh, made with high quality, and of course with love.
5. Find Tinguely Fountain
The most playful fountain that I have ever seen. It is designed by Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely and now it is officially one of Basel’s landmarks.

6. Stop at the Minster Hill
Go to this highest point in Basel and enjoy the panoramic view of this beautiful city. Let me spill you a secret, you are lucky because you don’t have to climb too high to enjoy the view 🙂

7. Visit Town Hall One of the most colourful town halls that I’ve ever seen, complemented with a painting facade in Late Burgundian Gothic Style.

8. Have a walk along the Rhine river
Or you can also take a boat trip. But I prefer to walk since I can pick up the vibe of the city more this way. Breathe the breezy Rhyne air.

9. Take a closer look at Spalentor
Not your average gate, since this is a fortified gate that has been here since 1866 in the town. It is also marking the end of Basel’s old town.
10. Join the Carnival of Basel (Basel Fesnacht)
Don’t miss it! Since it is the biggest carnival in Switzerland that takes place only once a year between Feb-March and has been listed in UNESCO’S cultural heritage. So what are you waiting for, mark this date and schedule your Basel’s trip!
