Colmar – 8 Fun Facts Behind The Most Beautiful Town in France

@ Colmar for the first time, 2018

If you haven’t heard of this town before, let me introduce it briefly. Colmar is a town of northeastern France, near the border of Germany. Colmar is by far the most beautiful town that I have visited so far. Everything in Colmar is just like what you expect from a fairytale. Its vibrant colours, cute designed houses, flower-lined canals, sidewalk cafes, making this town one of the most photogenic spots that you will ever find.

I have been to Colmar once. But I have fallen in love with this town and decided to come back again, this time with my hubby. Why? Just take a look at the pictures below and you will get the romantic vibe of this city, no? 🙂

To know Colmar better, here are 8 fun facts that I collected about Colmar

1. Colmar was free from bombing during WW2 and has been preserved ever since
Colmar is a pretty little town and it has always been so. Rumor said that the wife of the general that was responsible for war strategies against Germany (Colmar was a part of Germany once) fell in love with this town so bad, that she requested her husband to keep his fingers off from this town.

2. It brings the next point where you travel back to the past as you walk through the city
When you are in Colmar, just pay attention to the building designs. Those ancient half-timbered houses have been the same since 1923.

3. Have you ever watched ‘’Howl’s Moving Castle’’?
It is an animation movie made by Ghibli Studio from the famous director Hayao Mizaki. If you watch closely, you will see the resemblance of the town setting there with Colmar.

4. Sprechen Sie Deutsch?
Okay, Colmar is indeed a town in France. But it was occupied by Germany once before being a part of France again after the war. When I was there, almost every local that I talked to speak a little bit to a good command level of German. Surprise.

5. Do you love wine?
Then you should definitely try the wine from Colmar. Colmar is the gateway to Alsatian wine country and it is famous for its Riesling wine 🙂

6. Taking about picturesque
Well, I would need to repeat this again. Colmar is so colourful, the most colourful town that I have ever seen. Every corner is beautiful, making it one of the most picturesque places.

7. Cute place with cute people?
YES! I just love how friendly the people here are. I was being served and treated so well during my time here, in the cafes, bar, museum, even the lady that sells soaps. Travelling is so much fun when you feel welcomed. Right?

8. The Smaller Version of Statue of Liberty in Colmar
I didn’t pick it up the first time I saw it. Apparently the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French to America during the American Revolution, designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi from Colmar. Who would have known!
