8 Reasons Why You Should Visit Ghent

Let me introduce you to Ghent, a lively city that is located between Brussels and Bruges. Unlike both cities, Ghent probably doesn’t sound familiar to you in comparison to Brussels. But let’s skip Brussels and Bruges and their popularity. Unlike Brussels and Bruges, Ghent is perfect for you who wants to see Belgium in a more authentic way. As you walk, you will see that the buildings are the perfect mix and balance between modern and medieval. And take a note if you want to avoid the over touristy vibe, mediocre souvenir shops, higher prices and so-so service, you will thank me for this because unlike Bruges Ghent doesn’t rely heavily on tourism.

This city is actually famous as a student’s city, making the options for more friendly pocket entertainment, eatery and drinking are more available. In fact on 16th Nov 1949, the students in this city protested for the constant rising prices of beer each year. I think we should thank them for this, don’t we? Now, how to reach Ghent? In my opinion, the best way to reach Ghent from Brussels is by train. You will need approx. 30 Minutes and 11€.

8 top things to do in Ghent 1. Explore Ghent City Center
Enjoy the architecture view since the early 50s mixed with the new ones. Unlike the other European cities, the city center of Ghent doesn’t scream old to me. Together, all of those architecture styles combine, they build a brand new vibe to the city.

2. Visit Gravensteen
The boarding castles of Count Brabant. Built in Medieval style, located in East Flanders. An interesting castle with quite a history, such as being repurposed as court, prison, and even as a cotton factory.

3. Chill at St. Bavan Cathedral’s Garden
There are a lot of churches in general in Europe. And the same goes to Belgium. But, this one is special because the porch of it is just as lush as a park. So, take your time here and chill a bit.
4. Stop at St. Michael Bridge
The main bridge of Brugge. You can spot it from afar since it will admire you with its neo gothic style. This bridge is considered as quite a popular attraction. If you want to take a photo with a landmark, stop and take a photo here.

5. Climb the Belfry tower
Not recommended to pregnant mothers, people with claustrophobic or scared of heights, and people with heart problems. This tower is a 91 meters tower to the top which one has to climb to get the panoramic view of Ghent. It will exhaust you, but it is surely worth it.

6. Explore Karen Market
Thank God it has no connection to the well-known Karen who always wants to speak to the managers. This market is a pop up space to spoil your tongue with a view because you will have tons of restaurants options surrounded by historical buildings.

Perfect for you who want to explore the churches on your trip. This church is a perfect spot because it is located just at the very heart of Ghent.

8. Check out the dining options if you are vegetarian or vegan
And you will love it here since there are a lot of options for you to dine. Even looking for more budget friendly options? No problem. Again, since Ghent is popular as a students’ city, there go your options.

So, would you visit Ghent?
