Have you ever heard of Copenhagen? Now how about Skagen? Chances are, if you are not from around here like me, this city is not the first thing that would cross your mind when you hear about Denmark. But, at the end of your reading here, I would assure you to at least visit Skagen, maybe after your Copenhagen trip? Well, let me take you briefly there!
So, where is Skagen?
Skagen is here, just right at the tipping point of Denmark’s northern part.

What is so special about Skagen?
Here are 8 top things that you can do in Skagen:
1. Eat Smørrebrød
Smørrebrød is a must eat in Denmark. It is more than your average open sandwich I guarantee you. A decent Smørrebrød is made from fresh buttered rye bread or dark brown bread and topped with commercial or homemade cold cuts. And in Skagen Dit Smørrebrød offers a lot of varieties of it.

2. Pay attention how the houses in this town are painted in yellow ivory with red roofs
They are typical here in Skagen. I was curious and from my research I found out that this is the result of the tradition back then, where the people of Skagen plastered their houses yellow before their Pentecost holiday. But it stays until today and makes Skagen unique the way it is 🙂

3. Enjoy sunset at this magical sand dune at Råbjerg Mile
The nearest sand dune that you can get in the Scandinavian countries tbh. It was quite a mesmerizing view to experience one. Read more about it here.

Magical hour @ Råbjerg Mile
4. Try the chocolate powder ice cream afterwards at the kiosk there
Coming from a country where chocolate sauce is way more popular than chocolate powder, trying out something simple but new was an experience for me. One thing for sure, the Danish really know how to make sweets. That simple vanilla ice topped with choco powder was a little piece of heaven indeed.

Yummy!
5. See live seals from the distance at Grenen
I love seals! They are just like dogs on water. The babies are also the cutest! If you are a nature lover or animal lover, you would want to see them too. Grenen is a long sandbar spit at the north of Skagen or the beach per se. Please note that you need to follow the rules if you see them, for example, not to touch the sometimes stranded baby seals since it would mix up their body odour with ours and the moms might not want to have them back. As a result, they would be left alone on the beach.

6. Standing between two clashing seas, North sea & Baltic sea also at Grenen
Can you imagine two waves from two different directions colliding? Get ready to see one here. Beware that there will be a lot of people there who want to take pictures, so be patient and wait for your turn.

7. Climb to the top of the light house, Skagen Graa Fry (for a panoramic view)
It will take you exactly 208 steps to reach the top of the lighthouse where you have 360 over all surrounding. When the weather is clear, you could also see the meeting waves. Make sure to take your jacket, hat and also binoculars with you.

8. Visit the sand covered church
If you are fond of history, this might be for you. This church has its history of being covered by sand. But keep in mind since the interior is quite small, it is not recommended for those who are not okay with heights and closed spaces. All in, it offers a great view of the surrounding area.

Too bad that I was there only for one day. I would definitely recommend staying overnight for a full nature experience.
The best time to visit Skagen is in July. Why? Since you have almost 12 hours of daylight and the warmest weather available.
