So if you are here, I assume that you have been considering or even finalizing Albania as one of your travel destinations. Congratulations!
Let’s move to the more important part, what are the necessary preparation pointers to enjoy your holiday to the max in Albania?
- Have a functioning local Sim Card
Albania is geographically located in Europe, but it doesn’t belong to the European Union (EU) nor share the Euro Zone politically. Therefore, a local sim card is needed. I chose an e-Sim since it was the more practical way for me to set it up with my phone. My e-Sim was Aeralo. Details and more information can be found here.
- Booked a car for your mobility there beforehand
Driving is the most comfortable way to get around Albania since it will give you independence in moving around. And booking your car online from home will save you a lot of time and headache. Please note that Albania’s roads situation and drivers mentality are not for the beginner and the faint of heart. Your safety is the most important thing!
- Have enough cash with you
Since Albania is still on its way to digitalization, please be ready to pay in cash in certain business outlets.

- Wear comfortable shoes
Albania is not a land without altitude. To be able to take a wonderful stroll for hours, give your feet some flexibility to move. A pair of comfy shoes will do their job for this.
- Avoid wearing presumably skimpy clothes
True, one can wear what one wants. It is a freedom of expression. However, this is a country which is not officially a part of the western world. Dressing modestly will save one from attracting unwanted attention.
- Exchange all your Albanian LEK to money currency of your choice
You can of course keep your LEK with you. But there are no other countries in the world which apply this currency. Unless you plan to visit Albania again, your LEK would be just sitting there in your purse. Or you can give it to any service workers, i.e. housekeeping. They would be very grateful 🙂
