5 Top Hamburg’s Christmas Markets

What is one of the best things about Christmas time? Do Christmas markets cross your mind? If yes, then this article is for you. I’ve been living in Hamburg for approximately three years and I can say that this city looks very mesmerizing with grandeur lighting and cute decorations that scream Christmas. I remember travelling to Asia on Christmas 2019 and Dave wasn’t impressed because the vibe was just totally different, and I get him.

Imagine walking on dark and cold days, where you have to put on layers of clothes, but suddenly you are being tingled by the good smell of mulled wine, pumpkin soup, grilled sausages, a lot of cute stands and vibrant night markets European style. It is a very charming sight. Plus, people seem happier, and it is very very seldom if you walk past them in this weather, because winter can be that depressing. Yes, I’m talking about the lack of sunlight and vitamin D.

So, Christmas markets are blessings in this time, and these 5 are my favourites in Hamburg:

1. Rathaus Christmas Market
Imho the most beautifully decorated ones with unique stands, from woodcraft until Merry-Go-Round. They go abroad and even organize a performance of Santa sliding with his ‘Rudolph’ train arranged above us with cable techniques.

2. Jungfernstieg Christmas Market
There are a lot of stands that would help for your Christmas presents hunting. What are you looking for? Winter accessories, kitchen seasoning, creative made incense sticks decos, chocolate? You name it.

3. Gänsemarkt Christmas Market
For you who want to avoid the usually overcrowded markets. I’ve been to several and this is by far one of the calmest, where you can chill on the corner, sit, drink and even have a proper chithat without having to scream at your speaking partner.

4. Apostelkirche Christmas Market
Perfect for young families since there’s an entertainment stand specially made for kids. Now, both parents and kids can have fun in the same place.

5. St. Pauli Christmas Market
They have funny mugs to add to your collection. Note that St. Pauli is famous for its nightlife, so its design might be a bit cheeky for some. But that is a preference matter, right.
