Why I ”Buy” Clothes No More

Do you know that the textile industry is one of the biggest earth polluters on this earth? Do you also know that some of them also employ under age to work? And that the fast fashion industries produce their pieces away from the developed countries, where the main customers are, but in undeveloped countries for

fewer responsibilities, such as less environment protection laws, low wages, and long working hours for the workers? These are the essential things that happen daily in this type of industry, to meet the needs of fashion. As I was a teenager, I neither paid attention nor questioned what is there behind a price tag. I shopped with my family, with the base of ‘’I love this piece and I want to have it.’’ After that, when I didn’t like the piece anymore or it was not really up to date anymore, I decided to ‘’recycle or donate’’ it away. Why ‘’recycle or donate,’’ you will understand if you watch the

The True Cost documentary film about fashion. In short, there is no such thing as fashion recycling.

But don’t you just love fashion and want to dress yourself nicely?

Yes, of course I do. And yes, I purchase clothes when I need to (mostly), but they are second hand and not from this fast fashion chains. I am so thankful for wonderful applications, such as Vinted or eBay-Kleineinzeigen, where you can buy, sell, or exchange your old stuff with other people without third party. It is environmentally friendly, because instead of throwing away your clothes, you get the chance of offering it to somebody that might be interested in your oldies. Plus point is you can make a little money from it. The prices are normally negotiable and relatively cheap in comparison if you buy new pieces. The only thing that you might want to invest is maybe time and effort in finding out and asking about the stuff that you might wanna buy, e.g. are they worn often, the measurement etc. Plus you can also pick the stuff up directly when the sellers are also from your town. I can’t imagine shopping in the more environmentally friendly way. And with those considerations above and these options why would I  want to ‘’buy’’ clothes again? Maybe just once in a while.
